The Foundation was established in 1979 by Sir Michael Tippett as a charitable Trust with the power to make grants in the field of music.

This was made possible through Sir Michael's lifetime gifts of a great number of his manuscripts to the Foundation. The manuscripts were then sold to the British Library where they are available for study. In the first twenty years more than 600 donations were made to young musicians and composers, new music performances throughout the UK and music education and community initiatives. The Trustees have always kept in mind Sir Michael's sympathies with composers and young musicians at the start of their careers, and people deprived of music-making opportunities for social or economic reasons.

Since the composer's death in 1998 the Foundation has sadly had to suspend its grant giving because of lack of funds.

The Trustees expect that the Foundation will be able to restore its grants programme in due course, but meanwhile very much regret they are not able to accept any applications or requests for financial assistance.
