Tippett at Morley College
During his time as Director of Music at Morley College, London (1940-1951), Tippett not only enormously enhanced the reputation of the College, but also played a key role in broadening and re-vitalising London's musical life during and after the Second World War.
In June this year, the Music Department presented two concerts at the College, to celebrate this legacy.
Meanwhile, in March 1999, a Tippett at Morley Fund was set up by the Friends of Morley College to commemorate the composer's work at the college. The aim is to facilitate the musical and creative activities of current students. Initial plans include refurbishing the Holst Room - the College's recital room where Tippett put on many notable concerts - and purchasing for the room a grand piano that will bear Tippett's name.
Further projects emphasising contemporary creative work are being planned. The Friends have launched the fund with a donation of £2,000 and have already raised over £1,000 more through sponsorship for Morley runners in the London Marathon.
Further fund-raising events are being planned by the Music Dept.
