Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute concert in Atlanta, Georgia
Back in 1981, Sir Michael Tippett conducted a sequence of performances of A Child of Our Time in Atlanta, Georgia. They will be remembered for a special reason, for at each one, the mainly black audience quite spontaneously joined in singing the spirituals.
On January 16, the Five Spirituals are featured in a musical tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. at Symphony Centre, Atalanta. The performers are the Morehouse College Glee Club and the Spelman College Glee Club, with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra conducted by Robert Spano.
Other performances
Sir Andrew Davis conducts the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in three performances of Tippett's Little Music for strings. These take place on May 13, 14 and 15 at the Max M. Fisher Music Center, Detroit.
David Lockington conducts the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in two performances of the Suite in D, both at Roy Thomson Hall, Toronto on June 19 and 20.
At the Sagebrush Theater, Komloops, British Columbia, on April 1, Bruce Rodney Dunn will conduct the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Divertimento on Sellinger's Round.
